Basic and clinical research is providing us with many of the clues necessary to solve this mysterious disease, but further study is needed before we can successfully treat and prevent macular degeneration. Current federal funding for research is inadequate: The amount funded each year translates to approximately only $1.23 per patient. An increase in funding from our government and the private sector is desperately needed to continue ongoing research into the causes and potential cures for macular degeneration.

Charitable organizations are usually rated on three major criteria:
- the percent spent on the organization's charitable purposes with a target rate of 60%
- the cost, to the organization, to raise $100 with a target of not more than $35
- whether or not an organization is willing to open its books
The percentage and dollar issues are usually displayed in pie-shaped charts in newsletters, reports and magazines that tell the story of how much the charity spends on necessary items that allow an organization to function. The hope is to spend as little as possible on "other things" and more on the mission of the charity.
The belief is that "watchdog practices" (for example, Guidestar and ePhilanthropy) and designated financial targets will measure the effectiveness of charitable contributions by providing donors information so that they may make informed giving decisions. In essence, it is easy to understand how much of each donation dollar is actually being used for research vs: postage, printing costs, overhead, fund-raising, etc.
