Previous Seminars:

March 30, 2008
On March 30, Mid Atlantic Retina and the Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF) came together to present a seminar about macular degeneration to those living with the disease, as well as their friends and families in Elkins Park, PA. The seminar, both free and open the public, was held in the Krauskopf/Ginsburg Auditorium at Congregation Keneseth Israel.

The day's first session was presented by MVRF Executive Director Lea Bramnick who spent some time discussing the history and mission of the organization. Bramnick emphasized the importance of organizations such as the MVRF in disseminating the latest information, helping those affected by the disease lead their fullest possible lives and in raising funds to find a cure.

Following that session was Allen Ho, M.D. who was on hand to discuss the latest information, research findings and treatment options in the field of macular degeneration. Dr. Ho took time to go through the information, breaking down the science to a basic level that all of the attendees understood and appreciated. The session closed with a lively and involved audience Q&A.

Susan Edmonds, O.D. informed the group about Philadelphia area services that are available to those who have visual impairments. Dr. Edmonds discussed the options that are available and how to go about utilizing these services and aids. She also provided the necessary contact information so that attendees could follow-up and look into these services after the seminar.

The seminar closed out with a fantastic presentation from Mary Betty Roeder, who was present to give her first-hand account of living with macular degeneration and how to not only live, but live well with the disease. Equal parts information and inspiration, Mary's talk was well received by the eager and appreciative audience.

Philadelphia, Small Group Meetings

November 2007
In November, the Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF) and Mid Atlantic Retina teamed up to conduct a series of small group support meetings in the Philadelphia area. These sessions, created for people with or people seeking to learn more about macular degeneration, provided an excellent opportunity for area residents to share information, coping methods and resources with each other.

This two-hour session was focused on the general health aspect of macular degeneration and what can be done to slow the progression of the disease. The feature presentation at each meeting, “Be Health Wise – Helping To Prevent AMD and/or Slow Its Progression” was presented by Susan Harmelin, Licensed Dietician and Nutritionist.

Harmelin reviewed the latest information about how to maintain a lifestyle that promotes not just eye health, but general health as well. She shared the latest research information about preventing macular degeneration and slowing the disease in those that have it. The session closed with a Q&A on the presentation and addressed general macular degeneration questions as well.

Participants were encouraged to share their personal experiences in the course of both presentations, as history has shown us that shared experiences often lead to greater collective learning.

Throughout the month of November, these small group support sessions were held in Center City Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia and Elkins Park.

As well, David Fischer, M.D., Joseph Maguire, M.D. and Sunir Garg, M.D. teamed up with the MVRF to present this same session in nearby Wynnewood, PA, in November.
