Residents of the South Jersey region were given an opportunity to learn about macular degeneration on November 3, thanks to a free, public seminar presented by Ophthalmic Subspecialty Consultants and the Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF). Presented at the Barry Brown Health Education Center for the benefit of people with macular degeneration, as well as their families and friends, this event was well attended by an enthusiastic crowd that was eager for information.

Lea Bramnick, Executive Director, MVRF, explained that the mission of the MVRF is to fund research into the cause, prevention, treatment and ultimately the cure for macular degeneration. The work of the MVRF is aided by the fact that one hundred percent of all dollars raised go toward these goals, as the organization is entirely underwritten for all administrative expenses.

Jason Hsu, M.D. was on hand to discuss the very latest in research and treatment options for macular degeneration. The audience asked highly informed and intelligent questions.

The subject of friends and families and the important role they play in helping someone to deal with macular degeneration was discussed by Mary Betty Roeder. Her presentation, "Macular Degeneration – Diagnosis, Depression and Rising Above It" was very well received. Roeder concluded the session by taking questions from the audience.

She then transitioned into her second session presentation, in which she addressed the crowd to talk about her own experiences with macular degeneration and how living well with macular degeneration is absolutely possible.

Ophthalmic Subspecialty Consultants and the Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF) partnered to present a free seminar on Age Related Macular Degeneration on November 12, 2006, at Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Lea S. Bramnick, Executive Director of MVRF, opened the session with an introduction to MVRF, whose mission is to fund research into the cause, prevention, treatment, and ultimately the cure for macular degeneration is aided by the fact that one hundred percent of all dollars raised go toward this goal, as the organization is entirely underwritten for all administrative expenses.

Eric Gregg, O.D., talked about the newest treatments available and the latest research into the condition. He discussed services for visually impaired people, and the adaptive aids available.

The crowd that lingered afterward expressed gratitude to the seminar organizers, with many saying how grateful they were to be able to get information in clear, easily understood language, with the time for individual questions.

Voorhees, Small Group Meetings

November 2007
In November, the Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF) and Ophthalmic Subspecialty Consultants teamed up to conduct a small group support meeting in Voorhees. This session, created for people with or people seeking to learn more about macular degeneration, provided an excellent opportunity for area residents to share information, coping methods and resources with each other.

This two-hour session was focused on the general health aspect of macular degeneration and what can be done to slow the progression of the disease. The feature presentation at each meeting, “Be Health Wise – Helping To Prevent AMD and/or Slow Its Progression” was presented by Susan Harmelin, Licensed Dietician and Nutritionist.

Harmelin reviewed the latest information about how to maintain a lifestyle that promotes not just eye health, but general health as well. She shared the latest research information about preventing macular degeneration and slowing the disease in those that have it. The session closed with a Q&A on the presentation and addressed general macular degeneration questions as well.

Participants were encouraged to share their personal experiences in the course of both presentations, as history has shown us that shared experiences often lead to greater collective learning.

The small group support session was held at the Barry Brown Health Education Center.
